Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the official currency. It is advisable to exchange money at banks with more favourable exchange rates; most are open Monday to Friday. We recommend exchanging enough currency for general tips, excess luggage fees (at the airport often payable only in cash), taxes and small pocket change. Most restaurants, hotels, car rental companies, and larger shops accept major credit cards (Visa and Master, whereas American Express is less accepted). ATM facilities are available at larger airports such as Jakarta, Bali and Ujung Padang (also called Makassar) but are rare in smaller regional airports.
